How to use the Unix timestamp converter
- Pick a direction. “Timestamp → date” turns a number like 1759362893 into a readable date; “Date → timestamp” does the reverse.
- Paste a timestamp or pick a date. Seconds and milliseconds are auto-detected — or force the unit with the selector. The “Now” button fills in the current moment.
- Choose a time zone. See the same instant rendered in any curated zone; daylight saving changes are applied correctly, past and future.
- Copy what you need. UTC, the selected zone, the ISO 8601 string, and the relative time (“3 hours ago”) each have a copy button; the reverse direction gives you seconds and milliseconds.
- Watch it live. Tick “Live clock” to see the current Unix time update every second — handy for debugging time-based code.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970, known as the Unix epoch. It is also called epoch time or POSIX time, and it is how most computers and programming languages store dates internally.
How do I convert a timestamp to a date?
Paste the timestamp into the box above and the date appears instantly. The tool shows the UTC time, your local browser time, the ISO 8601 string, and a relative phrase like 3 hours ago.
How do I convert a date to a timestamp?
Switch to the Date to timestamp tab, pick a date and time, choose the time zone they belong to, and the tool gives you the Unix time in seconds and milliseconds. Daylight saving transitions are handled automatically.
What is the difference between seconds and milliseconds timestamps?
A seconds timestamp has 10 digits, like 1759362893, and counts whole seconds since the epoch. A milliseconds timestamp has 13 digits, like 1759362893123, and counts thousandths of a second. This tool auto-detects which one you pasted, and you can override it with the unit selector.
How does the tool handle time zones and daylight saving time?
Conversions use the Intl.DateTimeFormat engine built into your browser with full IANA time zone data, so offsets and daylight saving changes are applied correctly for every date, past or future.
What does the relative time mean?
Relative time compares the timestamp with right now and phrases the difference in plain words, such as 30 seconds ago, in 5 minutes, 3 hours ago, or in 2 days.
Can I convert dates before 1970?
Yes. Dates before the Unix epoch become negative timestamps. For example, one day before the epoch, 1969-12-31, is -86400 in seconds. The tool handles negative timestamps in both directions.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Every conversion runs in your browser with JavaScript only. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, stored, or logged.
