Random Group Generator
Paste your class list, pick how to split it, and get fair, balanced groups in one click.
How to split a class into random groups
Splitting a class into groups by hand is slow and never feels fair — someone always suspects the teacher played favorites. A random group generator removes the argument: it shuffles the names properly and deals them out into balanced teams, so every split is defensible and takes seconds.
- Paste your names. Put one name per line in the box — copy them straight from a spreadsheet or attendance list.
- Choose your split. Pick Number of groups (e.g. 4 groups for four stations) or Groups of size (e.g. groups of 3 for lab partners), then enter the number.
- Generate. The names are shuffled and dealt into balanced groups — sizes differ by at most one, with extras spread across the first groups.
- Reshuffle, copy, or print. Don't like the deal? Hit Shuffle again. Use Copy results to paste groups into a slide or chat, or Print for a paper list.
Fair groups, every time
The shuffle uses your browser's built-in randomness, and the dealing step guarantees no name appears twice and no name is left out. If you ask for more groups than you have names, the tool caps the groups at one per person and tells you — it never invents empty teams.
What is a random group generator?
A random group generator takes a list of names and splits them into fair, randomized groups. Paste your class list, choose how many groups you want or how big each group should be, and click Generate - every name lands in exactly one group.
Is this random group generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, no accounts, and no limits. Everything runs in your browser, so your class lists are never uploaded or stored.
How do I split a list into groups?
Paste one name per line in the box, pick Number of groups or Groups of size, enter your number, and click Generate. Click Shuffle again to re-deal the groups, or Copy results to paste them into a document or chat.
Are the group sizes even?
Yes. Groups are balanced so sizes differ by at most one - with 10 students and 3 groups you get groups of 4, 3, and 3, with the extra students spread across the first groups.
Can I use it as a random team generator?
Absolutely. It works just like a random team generator: it shuffles names fairly and deals them out so every team is random. Use it for sports teams, project groups, breakout rooms, or lab partners.
