How to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions
Fraction problems follow a small set of reliable moves. Master these, and every fraction homework set works the same way.
- Add and subtract: convert both fractions to improper fractions, find the least common denominator, rewrite each fraction with it, then add or subtract the numerators.
- Multiply: multiply the numerators together and the denominators together — no common denominator needed.
- Divide: flip the second fraction and multiply instead ("keep, change, flip").
- Simplify: divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor until the fraction is in lowest terms.
Simplifying fractions to lowest terms
To simplify fractions, find the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator and divide both by it. For example, 2/4 simplifies to 1/2 because both numbers divide by 2. This calculator simplifies every answer automatically and tells you the divisor in the steps.
How do I use this fraction calculator?
Type each fraction as a whole number plus a numerator and denominator (for example 1 2/3), pick plus, minus, multiply, or divide, and click Calculate. You get the answer as a mixed number, an improper fraction, and a decimal, with every step shown.
How do you simplify fractions?
To simplify fractions, divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor — for example 2/4 simplifies to 1/2 because both divide by 2. This fraction calculator simplifies every result automatically and shows the step.
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number with a fraction, like 2 1/3. This mixed number calculator reads your input in mixed-number style and shows the answer that way too, next to the improper fraction 7/3 and the decimal 2.333333.
How do you add and subtract fractions with different denominators?
Convert both to improper fractions, find the least common denominator, rewrite each fraction with it, then add or subtract the numerators. The steps panel walks through exactly that — try 1/2 + 1/3 and watch it find the common denominator 6.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction (keep, change, flip) and multiply: (1/2) divided by (1/4) = (1/2) x (4/1) = 4/2 = 2. The calculator shows the flipped fraction in its steps.
Is the fraction calculator free?
Yes — completely free, no account needed. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
